ABOUT
THE CONFERENCE
This conference delves into the intricate relationship between gender, translation, and conflict, with a focus on recent conflicts like the Ukraine war, as well as those in Afghanistan, Syria, and Palestine. It acknowledges the differing impacts of violence on men and women, from direct combat injuries to the disproportionate suffering of women through sexual violence, displacement, and vulnerability.
The event highlights the vital role of translators and interpreters in reporting violence and suggests providing women with same-gender language support and translated materials for a trusting environment.
Building on the work of scholars like Mona Baker and others, the conference explores how translators shape the gendered aspects of conflict narration. It fills the gap in academic literature regarding gender issues in conflict zones.
With an interdisciplinary approach, this conference aims to intertwine gender, translation, and conflict to better understand our globalized reality. It seeks to empower those targeted by war strategies, particularly recognizing the use of sexual violence as a weapon. Join us for this insightful discussion.
